In this episode of FAQ with AGIQ, we're going to talk about some water reclamation dos, don'ts, and generally what you need to consider when you're talking about it. Obviously, this industry is both very energy and water heavy, and in order to maintain good stewardship of our marketplace, our planet, we need to ensure that we're doing whatever we can to reduce our impacts.
Part of that is the opportunity to both reduce your impact and reduce your costs by reclaiming water from all the different sources available to you and your building. One of the ones that's often neglected, though, is the water that comes out of your HVAC system, your dehumidifiers, your air conditioners. That's all water that is distilled effectively when it comes off that coil, but can be contaminated in the path from the coil and from the drain pan to your makeup water tank.
So when you're selecting equipment or if you're going to head down the water reclamation path, one of the ways that you can do that with less cost and less overall filtration required is by selecting equipment that has no metal oxide contamination in its water stream. So things like fully dipped coils, including the casing and return bends, a powder coated or plastic drain pan, plastic components in the typically PVC components in that drain to waste scenario.
All of those will help you reduce your contamination of that water reclamation stream and allow it to go much more directly into a make up water tank, and not require as much water treatment in order to successfully reclaim it. It's definitely worth doing. It can save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in water.
Again, every every water or every pound of water that goes into your space, you know, 95% of that is going to end up getting into a wastewater stream of some kind, whether that's a drain to waste off your trays or condensate out of your HVAC equipment. Only about 5% is going to stay in your plants on a really, really good day.
So there's a lot of value in reclaiming this and a lot of capacity to save some money and be a better steward of the environment. It's worth doing.
